I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I took a shot in the dark and purchased a second one of these (Amazon was kind enough to take back the first). In our case, the second one is a charm. It works well, with all my pros still going for it. Of course, the cons remain a problem, but I purchased some microphone covers to muffle the sound a bit and longer corded microphones. Other than the issues listed below, this second one is working well. I have, in recent months, suggested it to people since the price is good and this second one is working for us.

Previous review:
It worked great- until it broke on the third day of use. The microphone input pushed into the machine and that was it. I could take it apart and attempt to fix it, but that might invalidate the warranty so I'll send it back.
Pros:
- The sound was pretty good on the speaker (for the price, of course)
- Was compact and lightweight
- Played my i-junk just as well as the songs on the machine
Cons
- It was very lightweight and cheap-feeling
- Couldn't turn down the volume to the microphones= very loud singing
- Songs included are terrible- I understand they can't pay the rights to good songs, but these were just horrible

Right, so I got this unit. It didn't weigh as much as it could. After all the ones at the studio are much heavier. But then they cost about $4000. each. And I only got one mic', you know there should be 4 or 5 AT that price. Then I sang into it and nothing happened.. Oh, it doesn't automatically come on and play the background I had in my head. WOW. Maybe this is a low end unit. Maybe if I wanted a professional studio model I should have pulled a bigger wad of money out. Anyway, all other silly observations aside, this is a great little unit. It has songs worth messing with. It has an SD and a mp3 input (with power). The lyric screen actually works and is easy to see... But not from across a basketball court. (duh). The speaker is small but so is the "portable" machine. I would opt to get an extension mic' cord or one of those neat wireless ones by Pyle on Amazon (about $20). No, it is NOT a mixing studio nor would I go "pro" with it. It is, what it is; a really neat unit for kids (and family) to enjoy without costing an arm and leg. The down side is that when you put on your Elvis costume and put the unit in your convertable, be sure to watch for rain. It isn't waterproof. You also don't get a radio or a cd,dvd, or 8-track player. There is a model that has most of those but then we are back up to a bigger wad of money... Remember TANSTAAFL (There ain't no such thing as a free lunch).
